Sleepovers, Birthdays, and Jesus: Faith in the Chaos
Feb 02, 2026
Last night our house was full of twelve-year-olds.
Sleeping bags everywhere. Loud laughter bounced off the walls. Music playing just a little too loud. Inside jokes I didn’t understand. Big reactions to small things. A little drama. A lot of energy. And absolutely no one—except maybe me—thinking about sleep.
We hosted my daughter’s sleepover birthday party, and it was exactly what you’d expect: fun, chaotic, loud, awkward at times... and exhausting in the way only middle schoolers can manage.
At one point, I realized I was the only person in the house counting the hours of sleep left we could still get—everyone else was counting snacks.
There were moments I wanted to step in and manage everything. Moments I wondered if I should intervene more—or less. Moments, I questioned my own patience and parenting choices. And moments I reminded myself: this is part of growing up. And this is part of loving kids well.
Jesus doesn’t only meet us in calm, reflective moments.
He meets us in lived-in ones.
In the noise.
In the uncertainty.
In the moments where we’re present but not in control.
This morning, the house is quiet again. The sleeping bags are folded. The birthday cake is gone. I’m running on very little sleep—and a lot of perspective. I’ll definitely need a nap today. But I’m grateful for the memory we made, even if it wasn’t perfect.
Because sometimes faith isn’t about a beautiful moment—it’s about showing up, staying steady, and trusting that God is at work even when things feel messy and unfinished.
This Week’s Faith Habit
Release control once today.
Notice one moment where you’re tempted to manage, fix, or smooth everything over.
Pause. Breathe.
Ask God for wisdom instead of control—and then take the next faithful step.
Faith doesn’t grow by accident.
It grows as we learn to trust God in real life.
Grace and peace (and yes... a nap),
