Chickens, Menopause, and Jesus!
Apr 20, 2026
We have chickens.
Which already sounds a little questionable because—we do not live on a farm. We live in a regular neighborhood. In Los Angeles County. With neighbors. And Amazon deliveries. And everything.
But my husband built us a little side coop, and honestly? It’s been great. Fresh eggs. Every morning. With a family of six, it felt like we had unlocked a life hack. Until... it all came to a screeching halt.
Our four hens stopped laying eggs. Not slowed down. Not “every once in a while.” I’m talking zero. eggs. For over a year. A full, committed, silent protest. At some point, I just accepted it. I mean, they had a good run.
And then I found myself wondering things I never thought I’d Google: “Do chickens go through menopause?” (Still unclear, by the way.)
I had fully decided: This season is over. They’re done. And then...Two weeks ago. BAM. Eggs. One. Then another. Then another. Like nothing had ever happened. Like they hadn’t just ghosted their responsibilities for a year. Like they weren’t clearly retired.
They just... started again.
And I felt the Lord whisper: “See? You thought it was over.” We are so quick to declare something finished.
- That opportunity is gone.
- That season has passed.
- That part of my life is over.
We don’t always say it out loud... but we quietly close the door. Because it’s been too long. Too quiet. Too unproductive. Too... eggless.
But God doesn’t operate on our expiration dates. What looks dormant to you may just be waiting on the appointed time.
There is this cool verse in Habakkuk that says:
“Though it linger... wait for it.”
Not because God forgot. Not because it died. Not because you missed it. But because timing matters to Him.
And here’s what I keep learning: Just because it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it won’t happen at all. Those chickens? I wrote them off. God? He’s not writing your story off.
This Week’s Faith Habit
Pick one thing in your life that feels delayed. Not ten things. Not your entire life spiral. Just one thing that feels like: “I thought this would have happened by now.” Then do this:
- Write it on a sticky note
- Place it somewhere you’ll see daily (mirror, car, desk)
- Don’t overthink it
- Don’t try to fix it
Just pause for 5 seconds and remind yourself: “God is not late.” That’s it. You are training your heart to wait without spiraling. To trust without controlling. To hold something without declaring it dead.
And if you are in that in-between space where:
- Nothing seems to be happening
- You’re tempted to move on
- And you’re quietly wondering if it’s too late
That’s exactly why I wrote: Not One Moment Late: Trusting God's Timing for Your Life
Because so many of us are standing in front of something that looks like it’s over...When God is simply saying: “Wait for it.”
And if you happen to own chickens...Maybe don’t give up on them either. 🐓🥚
