Camp, Signatures, and Jesus
Aug 11, 2026
One of my favorite parts of going to summer camp as a kid wasn't the campfire. It wasn't the canoeing. It wasn't even the snack shack. It was... the cabin walls.
I know.
That's probably not what the camp directors were hoping for. Our cabins were made of rough wooden logs, and over the years, they had become covered with what I can only describe as approved graffiti.
Girls had carved their names. Written Bible verses. Added little hearts. Left funny sayings. Signed the date they were there.
As soon as I claimed the top bunk, I'd stretch out on my sleeping bag and spend way too much time reading the walls instead of unpacking.
"Kim was here. Summer '84."
"Jesus loves you!"
"Best week ever!"
"Friends forever."
Some were thoughtful. Some were funny. Some... probably should have remained private thoughts. I remember wondering who these girls were.
Were they funny? Were they homesick? Did they come back every summer? Were they still following Jesus?
It was amazing to think that years before I arrived, someone else had slept in that very same bunk, stared at that very same ceiling, and decided to leave something behind.
Long after they had gone home, their words were still speaking.
As I think back, it makes me smile. Not because of the signatures. But because everyone of us is leaving marks somewhere.
Maybe not on wooden cabin walls. But on our families. Our coworkers. Our neighbors. Our children. Our friends. Every conversation. Every encouragement. Every act of kindness. Every moment of patience. Every quiet sacrifice.
We're all carving something into the lives of the people around us.
People may never read our names carved into a log. But they'll remember how we made them feel.
They'll remember whether we encouraged them. Whether we showed grace. Whether we reflected Jesus. That's the kind of legacy that lasts much longer than wood.
Years from now, I doubt anyone will remember what I accomplished on an average Tuesday. But I hope someone remembers they felt seen.
Loved.
Encouraged.
Closer to Jesus because our paths crossed.
That's a signature worth leaving behind.
This Week’s Faith Habit
Write some encouragement!
Leave one anonymous encouragement this week.
Write a handwritten note. Leave flowers on a coworker's desk. Pay for someone's coffee. Drop an encouraging card in a mailbox. Don't sign your name.
Just quietly leave behind evidence that Jesus was there.
Because sometimes the most lasting signatures are the ones no one knows who wrote.
Although... if camp taught me anything, it's that if you absolutely must carve something into a log, make sure you spell your own name correctly. Someone has probably been wondering who "Jenifer" was for the last thirty years. 😆
