Airplanes, Arguments, and Jesus

There are few places better for people-watching than an airplane.

You're all trapped together for a few hours, and before long, you know who's traveling for business, who's headed to Disney, who's already asleep before takeoff, and who's opening a tuna sandwich at 30,000 feet.

On my last flight, I happened to be seated next to an older married couple. They were delightful. Mostly. As soon as we reached cruising altitude, the wife turned to her husband.

"You should watch this show."

Without even looking up, he replied, "No."

She smiled. "I'll put it on for you."

"No."

"It's just like that show you watch at home."

"No, it isn't."

"Yes, it is."

"No, I don't want to watch it."

"I already found it."

"I don't want to."

"I'll set it up."

"I said no."

Friends... I was trying so hard not to laugh. This woman had the persistence of a toddler asking for ice cream.

She had already decided what was best for him, and there was no turning back. She plugged in his headphones. She found the show. She navigated the menu. She held the screen toward him.

He kept saying no. She kept saying yes.

It went on so long that I almost wanted to lean over and say, "Sir... it's okay. We all know how this ends."

Finally, after several minutes of heroic resistance... He sighed. Picked up the headphones. And started watching the show.

She smiled with the quiet satisfaction of someone who had won a battle she'd never intended to lose.

I had to look out the window because I was laughing too hard.

As funny as it was, it also made me wonder how often I do the very same thing. Not on airplanes. But with people.

Sometimes I become convinced that I know exactly what someone else should do. I offer advice. Then more advice. Then... just one more thought. I explain. I persuade. I remind. I repeat.

Somewhere along the way, helping quietly turns into trying to manage someone else's life. Love can accidentally become control.

Jesus never forced people to follow Him. He invited them. He spoke truth. He extended grace. Then He gave them room to respond.

That's a good reminder for me. The Holy Spirit is much better at changing hearts than I am. My job is to love people. God's job is to transform them.

Grace knows when to speak. Grace also knows when to stop speaking.

Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is trust God enough to loosen our grip on someone else's choices.

After all... Not every battle needs to be won at 30,000 feet.

This Week’s Faith Habit

Listen Longer

For one conversation this week, practice listening longer than feels natural.

Before offering advice, fixing the problem, or sharing your opinion, pause. Let the other person finish completely. Stay curious. Ask one more question instead of giving one more answer.

Sometimes making room for someone to be heard is one of the clearest ways we reflect the heart of Jesus.

And just in case you're wondering... yes, by the end of the flight he was still watching the show. Some battles aren't worth fighting. Others apparently aren't worth winning.
